If there are no published results, then the race didn't happen. Here are the sites where results of the 33rd Annual Palace Saloon 5K have been published.

AllSportsCentral, Gulf Winds Track Club, MySpace blogs, and RunWalkJog.com have pretty plain vanilla results. CoolRunning.com and Marathon Books include some photos. Active.com gives you some data manipulation options, and includes an age/sex grade for each performance. Athlinks has a "Big Brother" feature where it has been collecting all your performances and storing them in a dossier accessible under your name--scary stuff.

Calendar Listings

As soon as Reid and I pinned down the date for the 34th Annual Palace Saloon 5K as 12 April 2008, it was time to start getting it listed on various event calendars. Here's what we've got so far:

Thursday, February 15, 2007

Back on January 24 Reid e-mailed me Linda Vannoy's design for the 2007 Palace Saloon 5K T-shirt. This year's shirt will be black with a blue-and-blue design. Of course, it would be much more effective for me to show the design rather than natter on trying to describe it:

It's a lot like last year's design, but with a different color scheme.

I made a promotional appearance at the Cookie Run yesterday. I decorated one of the fences:

It wasn't right next to the course, but you could see it easily from the finish area (which was also the starting line):
All of my Cookie Run race photography is available on Facebook, http://fsu.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2198368&id=5215641&l=b5388. You can see "the cups" in a few of the photos. "The cups" have also been out in the last three months at the GWTC Ten-Mile Challenge, the Wild Mountain Scramble, and the Tallahassee Marathon.

Back on 22 May 2006, the FSView mentioned the Palace Saloon 5K in passing one more time. Chris Rucker wrote this passage in his article, "The mess in Tallahassee: A look into Tallahassee's Messer Park and what it has to offer."
"The Palace Saloon 5k Road Race, the oldest foot race in Tallahassee, has used the Messer as its starting line for over 30 years. Runners from ages 9 to 70 have participated in the event."

Over thirty years old and one of the largest races in town, the Palace Saloon 5K has become part of the athletic landscape of Tallahassee. As evidence, I present Clark Evans' running blog, twenty-six point two. In setting out his goals for the 2007 athletic year, he lists the Palace Saloon 5K among his upcoming races, and further says:
Two weeks later [after the Springtime 10K], while not an official goal, I'd like to leverage all of the high mileage and speedwork into a personal best 5k time at the Palace 5k.

To restate what is hardly an original observation: with only three turns and not much in the way of hills, the Palace isn't a bad course on which to anticipate a personal best 5K.

By the way, Mr. Evans also mentions my obnoxious advertising efforts in his report on the Gulf Winds Track Club 30K.
Lovely course -- no traffic, not a hard surface, well-shaded through plantation lands, and some random distractions (Palace 5k ads/beer along the course, conversations, etc.) -- just very hilly.

I entirely missed this article that ran in the FSU newspaper last spring:
Palace 5K keeps on running
Local race maintains its popularity after 32 years

Health nuts and drinkers will join forces April 15 for the 32nd annual Palace 5K, which is the oldest 5K race in Tallahassee.

Beginning at James Messer Field at 8 a.m., the race will conclude after 3.1 miles at the Palace Saloon where runners will be treated to free beer and a T-shirt for their efforts. Those who finish within the top three fastest times will be rewarded with a trophy.

In his junior year at Florida State, Chuck Fisher, along with two partners, bought a gas station on Jackson Bluff Road with the intent of turning it into a bar. He thought that there would be a big market for his idea, especially since so few were open at that time.

Soon after the purchase, the Palace Saloon opened, and for 34 years it has been one of the most successful bars in Tallahassee.

Some people are such fans of both the bar and the race that they have tattoos on their thighs of the actual Palace running mugs.

"Price is everything," owner Chuck Fisher said concerning the success of the Palace. "I try to instill in my employees to treat customers the way they would want to be treated if they were going out somewhere. I have had some good employees work with me over the years. A lot of them are college students and will work a year or two even after they graduate until they find the job they want."

Fisher had such a good feeling about his new investment that within two years he bought out his partners, making himself the sole owner.

Many of his cliental were runners, so Fisher thought it would be fun to hold a 5K race.

The initial event was held 32 years ago at National Bridge Road. Despite the fact that there was only a dirt road to run on, the race still achieved quite a turnout.

Soon after, the Gulf Wind Track Club was created and included the race in their schedule, which helped ensure that the race became permanent.

"The track club has really carried it on and has made it a Grand Prix event where they have different age groups," Fisher said. "They have officially made it part of the track club as an event where they keep score on all the competition between the different age groups, so that has helped."

Members of the track team who participate can count their finish towards their personal goals for the season.

Individuals choosing to run are divided into different groups depending on their ages, so every runner has an equal chance to win within their own age group. This way, when all is said and done, there are more winners than in usual races. Different prizes are handed out each year.

The team competition will also be divided into two divisions รข€" men and women. Teams are made up of five to seven runners, and the fastest five will be officially scored.

The squad with the fastest totals of its top five members will be the team champion.

"The Palace 5K is a very reasonable race," FSU alumni Steve Johnson said. "The reason I personally always run it is basically to be around friends. We do not take it too seriously, because we usually run just to get the shirt and the free beer afterwards. This year I think I am going to try to run it in its entirety, because I just want test myself."

Anyone who wishes to run is welcome, but must first complete an entry form and pay a $12 fee. Those who wait until the day of the race to join must pay $15.

One also has the option of entering without receiving the T-shirt, which is $5 cheaper than the original price.

Either way runners are going to have to work to beat last year's record of 16:06 set by Lee Willis.

"My friends, Allison Anne Wedewer and Alicia Rapp, really inspired me to run in this year's upcoming Palace 5K," Palace bartender Kimberly Ficocelli said. "After working at the bar for a few years, I finally was able to free up the time to participate in the event for the first time ever. They have been close friends of mine for years, and they have been cheering me on to finally race. Hopefully I will be able to do great and finish first this year."

Mary Jean Yon wrote a very nice presentation essay for the Gulf Winds Track Club race directors of the year thing. It's on the Gulf Winds Track Club web site, and you can read it here:

The race made the Tallahassee Democrat for the first time in 2007 yesterday; something about Reid and I being named Gulf Winds Track Club Race Directors of the Year. The relevant passage reads thus:
Race Director of the Year. The nod went to co-directors of the Palace Saloon 5K, Herb Wills and Reid Vannoy. One of the most nostalgic races in Tallahassee hews to tradition under their stewardship. As long as Herb and Reid are in charge, we can look forward to seeing fraternity participants throwing up at the finish line for years to come.

Another mention in the Tallahassee Democrat, 6 June 2006. Another step toward legendary status for the event.
Rosen gives to sport that gave her so much

It's common knowledge that in volunteer-dependent organizations a few altruists typically tote the load for everybody else. Running clubs certainly work this way. Moreover, the speediest members of most running clubs are even less likely than the also-rans to tithe time or labor for club functions. This is understandable; eschewing volunteer work to focus on themselves likely keeps some top talents in the winner's circle.

Then there's Sheryl Rosen. As a cross-country runner for Marianna High School, Rosen was often near the front of the pack. A creditable 19:07 for three miles earned her a trip to the state cross-country meet in 2001, where she placed a respectable 13th in the Class 2A final.

Rosen continued training on her own while attending the University of Florida. She obviously knew what she was doing: recent age group wins in the Palace Saloon 5K (19:20) and Rose City 10K (38:58) have established Rosen as one of the emerging young stars of our local running scene.

Given Rosen's rising success, her youth, and her full-time job as a communications specialist with Ron Sachs Communications, one would fully expect Rosen to guard her limited free time, keeping anything off her slate that could intrude upon her own running. And one would be fully mistaken.

Two weeks after Rosen attended her first Gulf Winds Track Club Tuesday Intervals session, she was already asking about helping out with area events. She dutifully showed up at high school track competitions, offering able assistance at district and regional championships this spring. Her interest in youth running thus piqued, Rosen set about arranging for speakers to address youth runners on a regular basis over the summer. Rosen's goal is to get information to the kids about training, racing, nutrition, injury prevention and running at the college level. In keeping with her volunteer spirit, Rosen is making these talks free to the community.

The Running Youth Education sessions will be conducted on Thursdays in June and July, immediately prior to the GWTC/TPRD Community Track Meets. Each talk will begin promptly at 6 p.m. at the Maclay School Track, and end by 6:30 p.m. so that youngsters may warm up for the 7 p.m. start of the weekly meets. For more information, contact Sheryl Rosen at 656-4503 or (678) 787-4022.

Uh-oh. Tallahassee Democrat, 11 April 2006:

Palace Saloon 5K gives you several reasons to run

Running community column by Gary Droze
DEMOCRAT CORRESPONDENT

This column occasionally mentions upcoming races. Typically, events are lightly described, and I use a soft-sell approach, leaving it to the reader to seek deeper details. Not so today.

I completely endorse and urge participation in the 32nd annual Palace Saloon 5K (see gulfwinds.org for entry information). There are many reasons to jettison your original plans for the morning of April 15, and instead head to James Messer Field for the 8 a.m. race. Here are a few:

Tradition: The Palace Saloon 5K is oldest race in Tallahassee that has been run on the same route since its inception. Hairstyles, music, and property values may have changed since 1975, but the Palace Saloon 5K still begins with a flat first mile around Messer Field, a downhill second mile on Jackson Bluff Road, a steady climb past Belle Vue Middle School and a screaming downhill for the last 1/4 -mile. Longtime citizens can use the course to chart their yearly climb to fitness - or decline to sloth.

Personal glory: For those who place a premium on running personal records, this race might well put a smile on your face. It features a net loss in elevation, and yielded the fastest road 5K in Tallahassee last year. FSU doctoral student Lee Willis notched a 16:06 last year. His wife, Irish Olympian Breeda Dennehy-Willis, holds the women's course record of 16:31.

Post-race fun: The finish line for the Palace Saloon 5K is co-located with the doorstep of the Palace Saloon, which, as fate would have it, will be open for revelry this Saturday morning. How convenient is that?

Homage to a legend: Meet director Herb Wills won't tout his own past 5K performances. He's simply conducting this race out of a love for running and for keeping traditions alive. When you thank Herb on Saturday for making this race happen, understand that you are thanking a multiple Olympic Trials qualifier, a sub-14:00 5K runner, and the fastest ever Leon County high school 2-miler (9:00). Most folks with these credentials are used to catering only to themselves. Luckily for us, Herb isn't most folks.

See you Saturday.

David Yon gave us a plug yesterday (8 April 2006) in his Fragments column, http://gulfwinds.org/Columnists/fragments_040806.htm on the Gulf Winds Track Club site:

Palace Work

If creative marketing helps a race, the Palace should have a great turnout this year. Co-Race Director Herb Wills (Reid Vannoy is his partner in crime) has left his mark everywhere. When I close my eyes at night I see "Palace Saloon 5K" on the back of my eye lids. Every race I have run since the 30K seems to have those words pasted somewhere in sight. Herb and Reid, "I will obey, I will be there." The Palace is at least one of, if not THE oldest, club race. It certainly has the longest running on the same course of any club race. With over three hundred finishers last year it has grown to one of the biggest club races and just might be its most fun. It is great to see the good work put into this race by Herb, Reid, and Jeff Bryan paying off.

From the Gulf Winds Track Club site, http://www.gulfwinds.org/:

Willis to defend title at 32nd Palace Saloon 5K

By Herb Wills

Lee Willis, A Florida State University doctoral candidate in history, will defend his title at the 32nd annual Palace Saloon 5K on April 15. Willis won the 2005 race in 16:06, the fastest 5K road time in Tallahassee last year.

In the women's division, defending champion Breeda Dennehy-Willis is injured and will not be competing. An Irish Olympian, Dennehy-Willis' 2005 time of 16:31 is the course record for the Palace Saloon 5K. She also won the race in 2004. Four other women (Jane Johnson, Vikki Saga, Karen MacHarg, and Janice Gage) have recorded back-to-back Palace Saloon Championships. The only woman to have won three straight Palace Saloon races is Sarah Docter-Williams (1997, 1998, 1999).

The Palace Saloon 5K will start from James Messer Fields Park at 8:00 AM ET on Saturday, April 15. Race day registration and packet pick-up will take place near the starting area from 6:45 - 7:45 that morning. The course is USATF certified and finishes in front of the Palace Saloon on Jackson Bluff Road. Sponsors of the event include the Gulf Winds Track Club, the Palace Saloon, and Tri-Eagle Distributing.

Here's a quote from robbyturner.com:
Bobby finds time for relaxation too. He's an accomplished musician and plays regularly with Swing Shift, a local jazz band performing monthly at Bannerman's as well as other public and private venues. As a runner Robby has participated in many area running events such as the Springtime 10K, Palace Saloon 5K and the 15K Turkey Trot to name a few. To better integrate mind body and spirit Robby uses the practice of Yoga help bring focus to a seemingly scattered existence.
It's interesting that the Palace Saloon 5K is classed with the Springtime 10K and the Turkey Trot 15K. Now if we could just get the numbers up where a fixture of this class should be.

I have no comment on the yoga.
